Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on the 9th of August, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. As a child, she sang in her New Hope Baptist Church Choir in Newark. By the time she turned 15years old, Houston was singing professionally backing vocals with her mother on Chaka Khan's song from 1978 Im Every Woman. Jermaine, her mother and Lou Rawls were some of those who she sang with. The singer was also modeling for Seventeen Magazine in 1981. The singer began her career as a featured vocalist for the funk group from New York, Material as well. It was her high quality of her vocal work in the band that caught the attention of several major record companies, such as Arista with whom she signed in 1983, and with whom she stayed for the rest the duration of her career. The debut Whitney Houston album was released in the year 1985. It became one of the most successful albums of an artist. Many hit songs, including Saving All My Love For You How Will I Know It's Good to Love You as well as The Greatest Love of All were released on the album. They set her up to smash the Beatles record with seven consecutive US numbers one. Album sold in US 3,000,000 copies, and later increased to 25 million globally. The album gave her the first of the six Grammy Awards she has won.
