Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has won her two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey and was raised in the Baptist Church. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was bestowed by her cousin when she was eight. Latifah is a tall, 5'10" girl who was part of the high school basketball squad. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah began beatboxing with the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, made a recording of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The track caught the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and, in 1988, released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
